Red Scarf Society for the Performing Arts is organized to:
- Enhance the cultural life and promote the arts in the communities of Siskiyou County.
- Serve as a support group for the Yreka Community Theater which is owned by the City of Yreka. This will include sponsoring events in the Theater.
- Provide education outreach to the students of Siskiyou County.
- Fund raising for projects and performances.
Our name comes from the fact that one of our members who was responsible for our first concert was gifted a handmade “bumpy” yarn scarf to wear to a trip to New York where it was a “hit”.
She and our group decided this distractive scarf would provide easy, fun and attractive recognition. Over 160 scarves have been home knitted. The majority of scarves has been given to those actively involved in the organization and have been sold to interested supporters.
The Yreka Community Theater (YCT) was completed in October 1976 after much community and fundraising support. The lowest bid received for the theater exceeded the federal grant by $33,000.00 and a one-week intense local fund raising campaign collected $35,000 in pledges.
With the dedication of the Theater in October 1976, the YCT Guild was established and was responsible for present many great performances. The Guild functioned actively until 1990 when it disbanded.
Taking up and expanding the cause of the defunct theater guild, the Red Scarf Society for the Performing Arts (RSSPA) is a grass roots volunteer organization that began in the fall of 2004 when a talented young Polish pianist and a student at the Juilliard School in New York came to visit in Yreka over Christmas vacation. His concert was our first performance and the proceeds went to restore the YCT’s Baldwin grand piano. Since that initial performance, through 2011 we have had thirty two concerts, three of which were at our new venue, St. Mark’s Preservation Square, in partnership with the Yreka Historic Preservation Society. Also, RSSPA have held twenty three outreach programs for the students in Siskiyou County.
