Olivia Duncan at the Yreka Community Theater

OliviaDuncanFriday, May 15, 2015, 7:30 pm

Olivia Duncan, Yreka High School Graduate of 2011, and long standing Yreka performer, returned to the Yreka stage May 15th to give her Senior Vocal Recital which is the final fulfillment of her Bachelor of Arts at Oregon State University. She will be graduating with a BA in Music with emphasis in Vocal Performance and will be singing at the 2015 Oregon State University graduation ceremony on June 13th in Corvallis, Oregon.

Olivia was born and raised in Yreka, the youngest child of Mr. Michael and Dr. Christal Duncan. She started her performing career in dance with Theater Street Dance at the age of 6, and her acting and singing career at age 8 in a production of “Christmas Carol, The Musical”, with Siskiyou Performing Arts, as Tiny Tim, singing a solo at the Yreka Community Theater. As one fellow actor said, “She’s the next Ethel Merman!” a famous Broadway actress and singer, with a booming voice that projects throughout the theater. Olivia’s director, JJ Lewis-Nichols continued to put her in prominent roles, including playing the part of Oliver in the musical “Oliver”, and lead role of Mary in “The Secret Garden”. At Yreka High School, she played the part of Maria in “The Sound of Music”, with an amazing voice and maturity. She was in numerous musical theater productions, dance productions, and other school and church associated productions. She sang “Lean on Me” at the YHS 2011 graduation with Kaeli Pyles, and was Salutatorian for her graduating class. Olivia also has a passion for volleyball, playing for 4 years at YHS and for club teams in Oregon. She was chosen as MVP at YHS her senior year and made All-League. She still enjoys playing intra-mural volleyball at OSU, always the competitor.

At OSU, she currently studies voice under Megan Sand, and has also studied with Ruth Dobson. She has received several scholarships from the music department and from OSU itself. Olivia has been a member and soloist of the OSU Chamber Choir, under the direction of Steven Zielke. She has sung in OSU Opera Workshop for three years. She sang the roles of Despina from Così fan tutte, Miss Silverpeal from The Impresario, and Norina from Don Pasquale, Ilia from Idomeneo, and Donna Elvira from Don Giovanni. This year she also had the opportunity to direct a scene from Pirates of Penzance. .

Along with performing, Olivia has been the Vocal Studies/Opera Intern for the Vocal Department for the past 2 years, and as Richard Poppino, the Chairman of the Department freely states, ”Olivia runs the Department for us”. Olivia plans to pursue her studies with an advanced degree in either Arts Administration or Vocal Performance after studying this summer in Paris and working for a year in the “real world”, to take a break from academics.

She was the 2015 winner of the NATS Cascade (National Association of Teachers of Singing) vocal competition in Portland, OR for all of Oregon and Washington. She will be singing all of the pieces that earned her the top prize during the concert in Yreka.

The concert was held Friday May 15th at The Yreka Community Theater at 7:30pm and admission was free. The Red Scarf Society and Fairchild Medical Center sponsored the recital, with a reception following the performance.

The Yreka Community Theater is located at 812 North Oregon Street, Yreka, CA.
